Men's Health, November 2014, The Ultimate Men's Health Guy

"Too often magazine covers simply repeat one another, and we're not just talking about the last ten years of O, here. So when we launched our Ultimate Men's Health Guy Search last spring, we hoped it would produce a November cover that would be unique, inspirational, and stop readers in their tracks. Meet Noah Galloway, the double-amputee Iraq vet who is our first ever UMHG. In this shot by Peter Yang, he simultaneously broadcasts troubling disability and vibrant health, and instantly commands respect and gratitude. Corporal Galloway, we salute you--and your Men's Health cover."

This issue is quite unique indeed. While others focus on beauty and fashion, this magazine focuses on a more inspirational directive.

Portrait

3 most important rules of portraits
  • Create a second point of interest by changing the eye contact to something else besides the viewer.
    • Ex: woman looking at a ball...
  • Toying with the lighting in each picture will create a stunning effect and will nab the viewers attention.
    • Ex: silhouetting the subject of the picture
  • Take a series of shots in order to take many pictures to choose from.
    • Ex: Particularly for children or active subjects that do not stay still.

2 Environmental Portraits.

These Pictures are great representations of environmental portraits because of the fact that they are people who had their picture taken in their natural environment. For example, the lumberjack is in front of the trees he cut, and an engineer in front of all of his tools. I like the fact that both of these pictures are in a natural kind of hue, not entirely black and white, but with a shade of brown in there as well.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2 Casual Portraits.

These pictures present to me a casual feel. To me, it's not posed intentionally and it's not of anything extremely spectacular, these are just some beautiful pictures of some young women. The reason I picked these photos was the fact that I liked their composition and the background played nicely in emphasizing the subject of both photos.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2 Formal Portraits

These portraits make me feel that the subjects in the photos have authority because they are wearing suits. All of the portraits look uniform and very serious. The reason I chose these two photos is because they appealed to me.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2 Self Portraits

Self portraits are typically very artistic, and they try to tell something about the subject. These two portraits are rather interesting because of their creativity and the contrast of color and shade. I found it interesting that the entire background is black and white, while only a small part is colored.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I personally liked the Glamour Magazine cover for 2015 because it incorporates the use of a casual portrait to nab the readers attention. I would possibly be able to recreate this cover by having a person stand in front of a monochrome background while I take a close up picture.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I plan on taking a portrait picture, I must be aware of their composition. I would like to take a picture of my brother at his computer in order to create an environmental photo. Furthermore, I would like to incorporate balance and the rule of thirds into that photo to make it even better.

3 important rules of Tennis
  • When you are serving, the ball has to land in the service box diagonal to your position.
  • When you are serving, make sure that your foot does not cross over the white line, or else that is a fault.
  • When playing a singles match, make sure that you keep in mind the fact that you are not playing with the doubles alley, (which is the extra part of the court that is past the singles sideline.
3 examples of jargon for this sport
  • Winner - When the ball is served and a point is made without the other person even touching the ball.
  • 'No man's land' - The area located directly in the middle of the court, below the service line, but above the base line.
  • Love - This is derived from the french word, l'oeuf or egg. It represents the number zero, considering the shape of an egg resembles that of the round number. All games begin with a score of "Love all"
Tennis cliche

"It's her game to win, and her game to lose" - meaning that it's all up to her/him to either come out a winner, or come out a loser.

A player that is considered a legend in Tennis

Martina Navratilova is the person that is considered a legend for the Wimbledon tournament. Holding the most singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles of any person, she is obviously a legend. She was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia. She was introduced to tennis at age 4 and began to regularly play tennis at age 7. Martina Navratilova went to grade school for 9 years and high school for 3 1/2 years. She never went to college, considering that tennis players do not need a degree of some sort. She is most renowned for playing on the red clay surface and the grass surface. She is the only person of either gender to hold the top position for well over 200 weeks.

Balance

The subjects are the two boys presenting.

I don't think that this picture tells a story. What I could have done was to have waited till they presented, then moved to take a better picture.

Simplicity or rule of thirds?

The subject in this photo is the girl reading from the computer screen.
I don't think that this picture really tells a story. It would have been better to find a more interesting picture besides having a student read off of a laptop.

Balance or simplicity?

The subject is the girl that has her hand to her cheek.
I feel as though this picture captures emotion. The emotion it captures is boredom. The girl has her hand to her cheek in an attempt to keep her head from drooping, and that there is how a feeling of boredom is created.

Bad merger :P

It is not really clear as to who the subject is.

I feel that this picture captures a claustrophobic kind of feeling, what with having all of these people huddled together with what seems to be little to no room.

The problems that I encountered while trying to take photos with basic composition rules included not being able to move into the right position, continuously being acknowledged and told I was there to take pictures, and the fact that the pictures were very boring. It was aggravating to have someone constantly try to pose for the camera, or even have the teacher tell the kids to do better because "There is someone with a camera here to take pictures..." Not only that, but when I did have the chance to take a picture of a student who really didn't care, I found myself incapable of moving in the right position (lest I wanted to climb tables...) Also, that day's shoot was of the most boring topics ever, and just as I expected, the pictures clearly show this.

The technical aspects that I constantly kept in mind were the rules themselves, and checking everywhere to see if I could move around. Often times I could not move to my desired location because there may have been an obstacle in the way, and thus I had to improvise. Regardless, I managed to capture a few photos that follow a few of the composition rules.
